Food Reviews, Trinity Alps Trip: Cheddar Jack Cheese Spread from Packit Gourmet, Organic Garlic Pesto Frybread from MaryJane's Farm

A few weekends ago, my husband went on a weekend trip to the Trinity Alps with his friend Duncan, and puppy compatriot Guinness. He was hoping to reach Foster Lake on a ~17 mile loop over the course of 3 days. I'd packed him some homemade pasta with ratatouille, boxed macaroni and cheese for breakfast, homemade korean tofu soup (soondubu jjigae) for breakfast 2, homemade Thai curry soup, and other ready-made food to fill the gaps. I was excited to hear how the trip (and food) went on his return and asked him to take photos.

Unfortunately, Duncan and Guinness were not quite ready for the unforgiving Trinity grade, and the weekend ended short, too short for them to enjoy most of my goodies. There was time to try the ratatouille, the cheddar jack cheese spread, and the fry bread, but that's it. Alas! At least this stuff keeps well.

The Ratatouille writeup will be covered in another blog post and probably merits a second attempt. The ratatouille itself was incredibly good, the best batch I've ever made (out of maybe a dozen or two?), but the ratatouille-to-pasta ratio was apparently off. I'm still trying to get a bead on how much pasta each of us needs in a given serving, it's so easy to get overzealous and pack way too much. It's just my inner fatty going overboard at the prospect of unlimited simple carbohydrates.

So the only review I can provide, then, is a summary of Dennis' thoughts on the Cheddar Jack Cheese Spread from Packit Gourmet, and the Organic Garlic Pesto Frybread from MaryJane's Farm

Cheddar Jack Cheese Spread:
Flavor: 7/10
Ease at camp: 10/10
Price: $4.99
Would buy again: Maybe
Best for: a really rich snack

Notes:
cheese spread was pretty good

but kind of

like mayo with cheese shreds in it

lol

I don't know about you, but I'm okay with mayo with cheese shreds. This might be an individual thing, a question of just how shitty and kraft-lovin' your true tastebuds are. I'm probably going to pick another one up next time we do a long trip, it's something crazy like 50 grams of fat per serving. -N

Organic Garlic Pesto Frybread:
Flavor: 8/10
Ease at camp: 4/10
Price: $6.05
Would buy again: Yes, probably going to try the Cache Lake brand next time, along with a homemade bannock recipe sent by a redditor.

Notes:

fry bread was great but cooked up a little odd

I wasnt sure if I was supposed to squish it down or let it puff up

umm

I would have been happier if the batter was more liquidy

I dunno how that would have turned out

they soaked up a ton of oil

the batter was tacky and sticky

so not like pancakes which would have been easier

overall I give it an 8

I give the frybread a solid 8

I liked it

a lot of work and messy
